Bringing home a new puppy in Liverpool: a first-week survival guide

22 July 2026 · by Heather

A new puppy is one of life's great joys — and, in that first week, one of its great tests of patience. Here's the routine we recommend to Liverpool owners to get things started on the right paw.

Days 1–2: keep it calm

Resist the urge to invite the whole street round. A quiet, predictable first couple of days helps your puppy settle. Set up a cosy den, decide where they'll sleep, and start a simple feeding and toilet routine from hour one.

House-training from the start

Take your puppy out after every sleep, meal and play session, and reward the moment they go in the right place. Consistency is everything — which is exactly why our puppy visits reinforce the same routine while you're at work, rather than undoing your hard work.

Don't leave them too long

A young puppy can't be left alone all day, and shouldn't be. A midday drop-in visit for a toilet break, some food and a bit of company makes a huge difference to a puppy's confidence and your peace of mind.

Socialisation: the clock is ticking

The key socialisation window closes at around 16 weeks, so gentle, positive exposure to new sounds, surfaces and (once vaccinated) other dogs really matters. Little and often is the trick — short, happy experiences rather than overwhelming ones. Our puppy visits help keep that routine going while you're out at work.

When can my puppy join walks?

Once fully vaccinated and a little older, we start with short solo walks and build up to a gentle, well-matched group when they're ready. No pressure, no overwhelm — just steady, happy progress.
