A potter around the historic village green and the old brow is a gentle start, but the real draw is Woolton Woods just up the road — hilltop woodland that fills with bluebells each spring and makes for a proper, sniffy explore. For open space and a good run-about, Belle Vale Park's playing fields are a short walk away.

Woolton Woods is glorious in spring, but the bluebells are delicate, so we keep to the paths through the flowering weeks. After rain the woodland turns gloriously muddy — towels are standard issue — and in summer we walk the shaded trails early before the heat. Nervous dogs get the quiet times, away from the weekend crowds.
